Resnais’ Wild Grass at PSU’s 5th Avenue Cinema

One of the last films of the great French director Alain Resnais, Wild Grass (Les herbes folles) was awarded a special jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009.

PSU’s 5th Avenue Cinema presents the surreal comedy about love and desire, starring André Dussollier and Sabine Azéma. Wild Grass runs Friday, August 7, and Saturday, August 8, at 7pm & 9:30pm, and on Sunday, August 9, at 3:00pm.

Georges Palet (André Dussollier) comes across a woman’s wallet and turns it over to the authorities. Marguerite Muir (Sabine Azéma) retrieves the wallet and asks who found it. She calls to thank Georges, but he wants more and begins to follow Marguerite, demanding that they spend time together. She finally agrees, setting in motion a relationship marked by emotional turbulence.

Often linked with the the New Wave or nouvelle vague French filmmakers in the late 1950s, Resnais was equally entrenched in surrealism: “I hope that I always remain faithful to André Breton who refused to suppose that imaginary life was not a part of real life.”
