Bastille Festival 2015 at the Portland Art Museum

News Flash: The Alliance Française joined hands with the Portland Art Museum on Saturday, July 11th, to present the 13th annual Bastille Festival. Check out the fun on PAM’s online video!

The Alliance’s 13th annual Bastille Festival takes place on Saturday, July 11, 2015, from noon-6 pm. The Portland festival is one of the largest Bastille celebrations on the West Coast. This year’s festival moves from Director Park to the Portland Art Museum, in conjunction with the museum’s exhibit Gods and Heroes: Masterpieces from the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris.

The Saturday celebration is free and open to the public. What’s even better, July 11 is the Portland Art Museum’s Miller Family Free Day, so families will enjoy free admission to the museum itself.

Look for fun activities for the whole family, including music, art projects, a photo booth, street performers, le marché (the marketplace), and French cuisine.

Circus Artistry from Pendulum Aerial Arts

Look for roving performers from Portland’s Pendulum Aerial Arts throughout the festival. From stiltwalkers to contortionists to aerialists, Pendulum’s circus artistry will amaze and delight all ages.

Don’t miss Bastille Day’s Grand Finale to be presented by Pendulum at 5:15 pm.

Music

Enjoy a variety of French music from accordian virtuoso Ian Clemmons throughout the day. Clemmons specializes in the music of Brittany.

Lyric soprano Kala Mulcahy will be singing French Art Songs in the museum courtyard.

DJ Frederic Rouault, aka Fred the French Composer, will keep the music flowing.

Enjoy operatic arias from students of Hannah Penn, local opera favorite and faculty member in Vocal Studies at Portland State.

Just for Kids

The Portland Art Museum will feature activities for children directed by three artists in the sculpture garden. Kids will also be able to create digital stories and games through the Mythos Challenge as well as explore mythology through the Percy Jackson stories.

Pendulum Aerial Arts will offer hoola hooping and juggling activities for children throughout the day.

Learn about children’s immersion programs from participating French schools including the French American International School (FAIS), Atlas Immersion Academy, L’Etoile French Immersion, and  L’Académie Internationale de Français (ILA). Children will also find fun things to do at the school booths.

Kids and grownups alike will enjoy ongoing fencing exhibitions from the Northwest Fencing Center.

L’Avenue de la Cuisine

French-themed menu options will be plentiful from the Heathman Restaurant & Bar St Honoré Bakery, and Pi Squared. Enjoy free samples of Maille French mustards–as long as they last!

Adults will enjoy wine and beer in the jardin, with beers, an extensive wine selection of French and Oregon wines, aperitifs such as Lillet, and Hardy Cognac’s special collection of cognac cocktails. French wines will include M. Chapoutier’s Belleruche Rosé, Blanc and Rouge.

Shopping at Le Marché

Follow the signs to the French-themed indoor marketplace where you’ll find booths from Canoe Island (summer camps for kids in the San Juan Islands), Andeo International Homestays (student hosting service), Traditions de France (100% French-made items for the home), Les Couleurs de Provence (the famous table coverings of Provence), Versailles Gardens (elegant accessories for the garden), and Tati & Me (unique clothing for girls).
