Review Classes

Our review classes are designed to help you transition to the next level after a long summer break: comprehensive review of the coursework, ideal for finishing out the summer term as well as preparing for the fall.

True Beginner French Classes

These are classes for true beginners or for persons resuming their studies after a long period (and who did not have a significant foundation). The course covers greetings; introductions; nationalities; numbers; expressing preferences; possession; "tu" vs. "vous" forms of address; the near future; -ER conjugations; basic irregular verbs.

In response to COVID19, the Alliance is keeping its social distance by only offering online classes until further notice. See you online!

Beginner French Classes [A1]

Immediately following the True Beginner Classes, the 102 to 106 series (CECR A1) develops the student's comprehension and speaking skills to include making requests and appointments; comparisons; detailed descriptions; expressing quantities; directions; the simple future; past perfect and imperfect tenses; introduction to the subjunctive.

In response to COVID19, the Alliance is keeping its social distance by only offering online classes until further notice. See you online!

Intermediate French Classes [A2]

Classes in the range of 201 to 206 (CECR A2) progressively solidify the student's abilities as an independent speaker expressing a wide range of emotions, opinions, intentions and preferences; discussing events in all tenses; developing use of the subjunctive, and more.

In response to COVID19, the Alliance is keeping its social distance by only offering online classes until further notice. See you online!

Cultural Seminars

Cultural Seminars are a recent addition to the Alliance’s offerings that help us fulfill our mission of promoting French culture. Between class and event, in French or in English, those seminars are designed to nurture a more expansive knowledge of a particular subject in a different setting than a typical French language class. Most of the seminars include outings in museum galleries, music and performance venues, and degustations or hands-on cooking classes. Partners from past, present and future seminars, including the Portland Art Museum, White Bird, and the Portland Opera, help us bring a broader understanding of French culture and lifestyle to the community.

In response to COVID19, the Alliance is keeping its social distance by only offering online classes until further notice. See you online!

Intensive French Classes

Do you want to learn French faster than others? Challenge yourself with our Fast Track classes offered at 101 and 102 levels. You will cover those levels twice as fast as in a regular class! Each level meets twice a week for 5 weeks.

In response to COVID19, the Alliance is keeping its social distance by only offering online classes until further notice. See you online!

Instructor: Marie-Pierre Wolfe

Required: Edito B1 or equiv. Prepare for CECR B1/B2 level.

Instructor: Marie-Pierre Wolfe

Required: Edito A2 or equiv.

Description: Take a break from core classes and put your French skills to work in a real-life setting. You will prepare the week’s assigned reading prior to each class. You will then discuss the text you’ve studied, in class with your instructor and classmates, as well as learn more about the authors and their writing styles. This is a great opportunity to work on your reading and communication skills in a setting that no other class offers at this level.  You will be reading Colette, Jules Verne, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, André Malraux, Marcel Pagnol.

It's perfect as a pre-holiday family activity. Gather your family in the kitchen, set up your digital device and enjoy 90 minutes of cooking in French with Francine Chough.

After preparing a delicious meal, spend 30 minutes with sommelier Maxine Borcherding tasting carefully curated wines, conducted in English. The featured wines are available for purchase as a set on our website. Visit our Boutique for additional information on each region’s wine pairings.

Sign up for this bundle of four workshops for $165 or choose any single session for $49.
