Ivy Mills

Ivy holds a Bachelor’s degree in French and Psychology from the University of Vermont and a Master’s degree in French with a focus on second language acquisition and early French literature from Portland State University. Passionate about the French language from a young age, Ivy spent time living and studying in France both during high school in the town of Laval, and during her undergraduate program attending the Université Grenoble Alpes for FLE, literature and art history. Before moving to Portland in 2018, she taught group and private music lessons to children in Vermont. Ivy has experience working with learners of all ages and enjoys incorporating music and humor into her lessons.

Get a head start on the next level, have an in-depth review and practice during the two-week long break between Winter and Spring term! The brand-new Kick-start French Program is a 4-day intensive brush-up class (2.5 hours per day with two short beaks). Each class will focus on grammar, vocabulary and conversation skills.

Beginning students (A1, 103-106)

Learn to command the French you already know in everyday situations. Class themes will evolve around family, daily routine, hobbies, outings and food. Grammar will include regular and irregular verbs in the present and near future tenses, negation, telling time, possessive adjectives, asking questions, adjectives, and articles.

Monday through Thursday, March 22-25, 5-7:30pm.

Calling all aspiring world travelers and young geographers!  

From Norway to Egypt - join us as we travel around the globe to explore the different countries and cultures that make our little blue planet so unique! Each week, we’ll set off on an adventure and learn about a country’s cultural traditions, food and geography through hands-on activities and games. Your young global citizen will practice expressions for asking questions in French, traveling, describing animals, food and objects, and speaking about their likes and dislikes. At the end of each of our adventures, your world travelers will also have the opportunity to design and write a postcard showcasing their written French and favorite aspects of each voyage! 

 

Course objectives :  

  1. Students will engage in discussion and exploration of 5 - 6 (~2 wks per country) different countries around the world, their flags, cultural customs, food and geography.

  1. Students will learn expressions for describing objects in French, basic verb  and grammar constructions to speak about traveling and eating. Students will learn to express likes, dislikes and opinions. Students will demonstrate their learning and progress through participation in class discussion, games, and written postcard activities.

  2. Students will learn to ask basic questions to learn about their peers and ask for descriptions and simple information.

Street parking on SW 20th St. facing the Kamm House is limited. Free parking is available in Lot B at SW 18th and SW Columbia. Please obtain a parking pass from the office.

After 6 pm weekdays, students may park in the Willamette Dental lot at SW 20th and SW Jefferson as available.
