Weekly Apéro-Conversation Group from the Alliance May 27
Wednesday, May 27, 2020 5:15pm - 6:10pm
Weekly Apéro-Conversation Group from the Alliance May 27

The Alliance’s free weekly conversation group, run by board members and other volunteers, is held on Zoom every Wednesday night at 5:15 p.m.

It attracts 30-40 registrants who converse in small groups (Breakout Rooms) of 4-6 people for 3-4 segments of 15 minutes. Then the groups get re-created so that everyone gets to chat with a new group of people for the next cycle, and so on.

Participants are mainly from Oregon and Southern Washington but also hail from other states.

Levels include lower-intermediate to advanced and native-level speakers. Most high-A2 to C1 students can feel comfortable in this mixed-level conversational setting. Not sure of your level? Check in with the AF Portland office for guidance.

Sign up to be added to the notification list for the next session (no need to sign up again if you’ve already signed up for an earlier session). These groups are free, but memberships are strongly encouraged (just $36 provides membership benefits for a full year and is tax-deductible).

Zoom into Open House May 28, 5-6:30

Visit the Portland Alliance at our virtual Open House via Zoom on Thursday, May 28, from 5-6:30pm. Summer Term runs online from June 8 - August 15 in two 5-week mini-terms.

Chat with special guest François Wevers, the new President of the Alliance's Board of Directors. Share your thoughts about the new online Alliance with François or Alliance director Sherry Charles. Pick up some Zoom tips if you're new to online classes.

Enjoy mingling with your classmates, friends, and Alliance staff and teachers. You'll have to bring your own refreshments -- we can all toast the coming of summer. Scoot off to a break room anytime with a prof to discuss summer term options.

For diversion, we have a three question quiz for you –– the winner will receive a copy of Oliver Gee's new book, Paris On Air. Just put your answers into Chat, and we'll pick a winner at 6:15.

Register here to receive the Zoom link Thursday noon.

Decoding French Wine: A Three-Part Series with Tastings with Sommelier Maxine Borcherding, Friday June 5, 12, and 19

Decoding French Wine: A Three-Part Series with Tastings with Sommelier Maxine Borcherding, Friday June 5, 12, and 19

What in the world is in that bottle?

Reading a French wine label is like reading a foreign language. (Actually it is a foreign language – it's French!) But more than just a different language, those labels represent an entirely different approach to wine that confuses Americans.

Want to be able to buy French wine with more confidence? Then pour yourself a glass of something delicious and join sommelier and wine educator Maxine Borcherding for a series of short workshops on decoding French wine.

Decoding French Wine is presented in three hour-long seminars, from 5-6pm on Friday, June 5, 12, and 19. Drop in on any session or take the whole series. The seminars are in English, with a taste of French. $20 each for members, $25 for non-members.

Since tasting is essential to learning about wine, Maxine will taste three wines during each seminar and invites students to taste them along with her. The Alliance is pleased to offer these wines for sale to the seminar students; please download the tasting notes for more information. Salut!
