Fall children’s classes for ages 5 to 10

Story Time with a Twist - Children's Special

Ages 5 through 9 - Wednesdays 2:30-3:15pm - October 28 - November 18
Story time takes on a twist as your child becomes the story teller. Each week, the children will listen to a story and, in their own words, retell it. Easier said than done when learning a foreign language.
Each workshop begins with a simple story read by the teacher Joëlle Ceran, en direct de France (Live from France). Using their existing French vocabulary, the children are invited to retell the story with the support of the book’s illustrations. Through repetition and rephrasing, the children will begin to discover different ways in which to assimilate and reuse the language they are learning or already know. These 45-minute drop-in workshops are ideal for children with some exposure to French vocabulary such as...

Why did Catherine the Great buy up Voltaire’s library? How did Jules Verne’s fantasy novels influence Tolstoy’s philosophy of nature? And why did Tolstoy write a third of his literary masterpiece, War and Peace, in French? What led to Paris becoming an epicenter of Russian immigration? And why have Diaghilev’s Les Saisons russes received such accolades from French and European audiences? These are just a few of the questions this talk will invite you to explore, while illustrating the extraordinarily rich intellectual and artistic exchanges between France and Russia. We will look at several key figures and events, underlining their profound influence on the history of Western arts.

An Encounter with French Writer & Actor Max Élisée: en français

Join us on Saturday, October 31, at 11 a.m. for a “live” discussion in French on Zoom with Max Élisée, a French actor, screenwriter, and novelist. Max, who lives in Avignon, has ties to Portland through his friends and part-time neighbors, Alliance Française of Portland members, the Gardners.
In the Zoom session, François Wevers, President of the Alliance Française of Portland, will join Élisée for a discussion of the writer’s novels, including his latest release, Le baobab enflammé: Frédéric Edgard, vieux « chabin », c'est-à-dire, aux Antilles françaises, Blanc de race noire, a gardé pour lui les souffrances endurées durant son enfance.

Elisée's most recent book, Le baobab enflammé, is available on Amazon, as well as his previous novel.
This event will be entirely in French and is suitable for intermediate and advanced students and native speakers. Tickets...
