Cinema 21 presents Deux, writer/director Filippo Meneghetti riveting new film with Barbara Sukowa and Martine Chevallier. Meneghetti's film is France's Official Selection for the Best International Film category for the 93rd Academy Awards in 2021 and is also nominated for Best Picture, Foreign Language in the 2021 Golden Globes.
Two retired women, Nina and Madeleine, have been secretly in love for decades. Everybody, including Madeleine’s family, thinks they are simply neighbors, sharing the top floor of their building. They come and go between their two apartments, enjoying the affection and pleasures of daily life together, until an unforeseen event turns their relationship upside down and leads Madeleine’s daughter to gradually unravel the truth about them.
This virtual screening is presented by Cinema 21, Portland's independent art house theater. See all their current and upcoming films in their virtual theater at www.cinema21portland.com
Tickets to Deux are $12. After purchasing the ticket, you can view the film anytime in the next 30 days. (Once you start viewing, you have access for 72 hours.) Don't miss the exclusive discussion with director Filippo Meneghetti, star Barbara Sukowa, and French film icon Isabelle Huppert at the conclusion of the film.

Concludes with a live Film Discussion Event on Zoom on March 16 from 5:30-6:30 pm!
The Alliance Française of Portland is pleased to offer a unique film event through March 16. Register online, and you’ll receive links to three short films, with a total runtime of 63 minutes. All are subtitled in English. These are award-winning short films that have been shown in a few select festivals, Sundance among them. These exclusive films are only available for viewing in the U.S. through the Alliance Française.
Watch the films at your leisure through March 16, then join us for a live group discussion at 5:30pm Pacific on Tuesday, March 16. We’ll have hosted breakout rooms in English and in French (your choice) to talk about the films and their messages! Short films are often thought-provoking; note that these films are appropriate for adults (also ok for teens 18 and older).
Miss Chazelles / Miss Chazelles (2019)
Description: Clara and Marie are rivals. Clara is the first successor, while Marie won the Chazelles-sur-Lyon Prize. The tension rises between Clara’s friends and Maries’s family, but the girls are ambivalent.
Qu’importe...

The Alliance’s free weekly conversation group on Zoom, run by board members and other volunteers, is available for drop-in conversation on Wednesday nights at 5:15pm.
It attracts 20-30 registrants who converse in small groups (Breakout Rooms) of 4-5 people for 3-4 segments of 14 minutes. The groups get re-created/mixed so that everyone gets to chat with a new group.
Levels include lower-intermediate to advanced and native-level speakers. Most high-A2 to C1 students can feel comfortable in this mixed-level conversational setting. Not sure of your level? Check in with the AF Portland office for guidance.
Sign up to be added to the reminder emails for upcoming sessions (no need to sign up again if you’ve already signed up for an earlier session). These free groups are for Alliance members only. Sign up here for memberships. (Just $36 provides membership benefits for a full year and is tax-deductible. )
