Mary Weaver Chapin PhD,
Curator of Prints and Drawings,
Portland Art Museum,
Thursday, December 9, at 3pm

The feature exhibition at the Portland Art Museum Private Lives: Home and Family in the Art of the Nabis, Paris, 1889-1900 takes us into the intimate interiors of Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, Maurice Denis, and Félix Vallotton. More than 150 paintings, prints, and drawings from 40 different international lenders tell the story of home life in fin-de-siècle France.

Have you ever wondered how exhibitions of this size and scope come together? Join curator Mary Weaver Chapin for an informal discussion of the planning and development of this exhibition, 5 years in the making. How do you ship a priceless painting? Is it possible to write a book in your bedroom during a global pandemic? Who chooses the wall colors? All these questions will be addressed, with time for your queries, too! Join us for this lively afternoon, then enjoy the exhibition at the Portland Art Museum (through January 23, 2022).

This is rare opportunity to go behind the scenes and see the making of a significant exhibition. $10 Alliance members; $15...

Storytime for Children with Marion Donon in French: Vilaina, la petite sorcière
Saturday, December 18, 2021 10am - 11am
Storytime for Children with Marion Donon in French: Vilaina, la petite sorcière

Storytime at the Alliance as author Marion Donon reads Vilaina, la petite sorcière, a story from her Petites Princesses series:

A former actress and director, with a masters in clinical psychology, Marion Donon now devotes her energy to children’s literature, while raising two small children of her own. She divides her time between France and the United States.

A free storytime event, suitable for ages 5 and up, in French on Zoom, Saturday, December 18, 10am. Venez nombreux !

Ages 6-9  Saturdays 10:50-11:50

This is an in-person class!

This class will let children discover French language through games, movement, songs, engaging all of the senses: sight, taste, smell, touch, hearing. This multi-sensory class uses total immersion method to build the language skills through fun activities. We use the method with original songs integrated to the curriculum. Each class exposes children to familiar situations, so they are able to easily reuse their newly acquired skills at home. There is no required textbook for this class.

Class structure: The class evolves around two main elements: the ritual-based repetition and predictability (songs, mascots) and the surprise that comes with new elements in each class (new phrase structures, vocabulary, games).
