Weekly Apéro-Conversation Group Wednesdays at 5:15pm

The Alliance’s free weekly conversation group on Zoom, run by board members and other volunteers, is available for drop-in conversation on Wednesday nights at 5:15pm.

It attracts 20-30 registrants who converse in small groups (Breakout Rooms) of 4-5 people for 3-4 segments of 14 minutes. The groups get re-created/mixed so that everyone gets to chat with a new group.

Levels include lower-intermediate to advanced and native-level speakers. Most high-A2 to C1 students can feel comfortable in this mixed-level conversational setting. Not sure of your level? Check in with the AF Portland office for guidance.

Sign up to be added to the reminder emails for upcoming sessions (no need to sign up again if you’ve already signed up for an earlier session). These free groups are for Alliance members only. Sign up here for memberships. (Just $36 provides membership benefits for a full year and is tax-deductible. )

The Opera Garnier and Napoleon III, a lecture in French by Céline Glon
Saturday, October 23, 2021 10am - 11am
The Opera Garnier and Napoleon III, a lecture in French by Céline Glon

Louis-Napolèon Bonaparte became Napoleon III, Emperor of the French during the Second Empire (1852-1870). He began his regime by launching an enormous series of projects that modernized France. In Paris these projects were directed by Baron Haussmann and transformed Paris into a modern city.

The signature architectural landmark was the Paris Opera House, designed by Charles Garnier whose style reflected the opulence of the Second Empire.

This lecture on Zoom will provide a highly detailed portrait not only of Napolèon III, but also of Eugenie Montijo, his beautiful wife and empress who played a major role in society and French fashion of the day.

This lecture is $26 to members and $30 to non-members and will be entirely in French. The event Zoom link will be sent to registrants a few days before the event.

Pursuing the Dream: Living and Investing in France, with Adrian Leeds

If you’ve had even the glimmer of an idea to enrich your life with a move to France – whether living full-time or part-time in the Hexagone – this is your opportunity to learn the steps to help make the dream come true. In this one-hour session on Zoom you’ll get the inside scoop from moving-to-France and property expert, Adrian Leeds.

Adrian has lived in France for over 27 years; her expertise is renowned, and you might recognize her as HGTV’s top French agent on their popular TV show, House Hunters International. She understands the ins and outs of finding an apartment to rent or a home to buy anywhere in France (not just Paris). In this session she’ll discuss getting a visa, determining where in France you might want to live, and the steps to finding the perfect home. The session will include an open forum for questions.

This event is produced in partnership with the national Federation of Alliances Françaises USA. Attendance for Alliance members is free, and donations are appreciated. This event on Zoom is presented in English, Saturday, November 6, at 11 am PST. Zoom links will be sent to registrants the week of the event.
