  • New class format for French Grammar - Dynamic Language Practice! Explore grammar your way! Our tailored curriculum eliminates the need for a textbook. Share your discussion preferences via a form, shaping the syllabus to match collective interests. Students will have the opportunity to select from provided subjects and suggest their own topics as well.  This class is offered at B1 level.
  • Dive into literature on Wednesdays with an in-person class for B1/B2 level students. The subject this summer is “Timeless Characters: Exploring Legacy and Relevance.” Each week, we'll delve into the lives of characters like D'Artagnan, Gargantua, and Dora Bruder, examining how they embody their respective eras and discussing their enduring relevance in today's world.
  • Do you have some free time this summer and want to invest in French studies? Join our intensive Grammar For Conversation class, meeting twice a week for two-hour sessions. With four hours of study per week, you'll elevate your French skills to the next level in just 10 weeks! The Grammar for Conversation class is also available at a regular pace, meeting once a week. 
  • Our summer term offers a diverse range of mini classes, each lasting only 4 weeks, with two sessions available: Session 1 from July 1st to 27th, and Session 2 from July 29th to August 24th. While this page focuses on our 10-week classes, you can explore our mini class program on  the Mini Classes page.

Core Classes

Core classes are offered at 5 levels: A1 (Beginner), A2 (Lower Intermediate), B1 (Intermediate), B2 (Lower Advanced), C1 (Advanced). Two tracks are possible, regular or accelerated pace classes (for A1 and A2 levels only). Read more about level progression and classes for adults here. 

Beginning A1 level: 101 through 106 

The 100 - Introduction to French Immersion 101 class is a 5-week option, serving as preparation for the True Beginners 101 class.  This is an optional step and class is taught mainly in English.

The 101- This class is designed for true beginners who have not had any previous French classes. This is the first step in your French studies with the Alliance.

The 101-102 class is an accelerated course designed for beginners with some prior experience in French.. 

Accelerated and regular-paced classes are offered throughout the A1 level.


Lower Intermediate A2: 201 through 206

Continuation of beginning level.

Intermediate B1: 301 through 306

Grammar For Conversation

For levels A1 to B1

This class presents corresponding level grammar concepts through everyday life situations using current spoken French. The course covers, on average, 2 chapters per session from the textbook, during which students have the opportunity to discuss and apply grammar topics through written activities, conversation, and audio comprehension.

This class is offered for A1/A2 (prerequisite: 103 or equivalent) and B1 (prerequisite: 205 or equivalent), in-person and online.

INTENSIVE CLASSS opportunity: A1/A2 class will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from May 7 to June 5. The class will meet twice a week for two-hour sessions.

Essential Everyday French

For levels A1 to C1

Learn how native speakers communicate on a day-to-day basis. Interaction and exchanges between students are facilitated by the instructor following weekly thematic topics that include essential vocabulary and grammar.

This class is offered for:

  • A1/A2 (prerequisite: 104 or equivalent),
  • B1 (prerequisite: 205 or equivalent), and
  • B2/C1 levels (prerequisite: CECR B1)

Available both in-person and online.


Discovering French Culture: A Journey Through Civilization

For B2/C1 levels

This course offers a comprehensive synthesis of historical, political, social, and cultural knowledge essential for students. The curriculum is structured around two main axes:

1. Understanding the French system through its history, politics, and culture.
2. Exploration of French cultural achievements: literature, visual arts, performing arts, music.

At the core of linguistic expression lies civilization, which serves as its beating heart. Civilization not only narrates stories but also inspires storytelling, provokes reactions, imparts knowledge, and nurtures introspection. It serves as the foundation for meaningful cross-cultural dialogue. Join us in exploring the fascinating world of French civilization and culture in this year-long advanced French class.

For levels B1/B2 

Discover French literary works and authors with a well-structured textbook. Learn about different authors and read excerpts of their works. Perfect for those wishing to broaden their knowledge of French literature beyond the scope of a single book or author. Throughout the year, you will discover literary works from the Middle Ages to contemporary French literature.

Offered for B1/B2 levels in-person. L'amant de Marguerite Duras

L’Amant (also known as The Lover) is an autobiographical novel by Marguerite Duras, published in 1984 by Les Éditions de Minuit. The book, which has been translated into 43 languages, won the prestigious 1984 Prix Goncourt. Set in colonial Indochina, it tells the story of a French teenage girl who falls passionately in love with an older Chinese man. The novel explores themes of desire, family dynamics, and cultural differences.

Join us to enhance your pronunciation and develop your skills in French oral comprehension and production! This course consists of 4 sessions of 1.5 hours each, including an explanatory section followed by activities for oral comprehension to work on auditory discrimination, as well as oral production activities to improve pronunciation. This class is open to students at level A1, with the prerequisite of having completed level 101 or possessing an equivalent level.

Street parking on SW 20th St. facing the Kamm House is limited. Free parking is available in Lot A at SW 18th and SW Columbia. Please obtain a parking pass from the office. After 6 pm weekdays, students may park in the Willamette Dental lot at SW 20th and SW Jefferson as available.
