Bread occupies a unique place in French culture, history, and daily life. In this B1–B2 level workshop, students will explore the cultural, historical, and philosophical significance of bread in France, from its role as a staple food to its symbolic importance in literature, politics, and national identity. Through authentic texts, videos, and guided discussions, participants will examine questions such as: Why is bread so central to French life? How has its production evolved over the centuries? What can bread tell us about social class, tradition, and changing attitudes toward food? Students will also discover key moments in French history, including the relationship between bread shortages and the French Revolution, as well as contemporary debates surrounding artisanal baking, sustainability, and food culture.
