Ridicule for Ciné-Club Meeting March 4

Ridicule is an aesthetic and linguistic delight concocted by Patrice Leconte in 1996 that hasn’t aged a day.

Set just before the French Revolution in the 18th century, it tells the story of a young provincial aristocrat who comes to Versailles to petition for help for a engineering project back home, but finds he has arrived in the middle of the War of Wit.

The movie revels in the intrigues of the Court, but also addresses the development of the sciences during the Siècle des Lumières, the role of women in the sciences, and the invention of sign language, only a few of the many social transformations of the era.

The movie is available for members from the Alliance Française mediathéque and on Netflix (streaming and DVD). Annabelle Dolidon, Professor of French at PSU, will moderate the discussion. Click here to register.

Ticket price: $5 for members; $7 for non-members.
