The French New Wave: Revolution and Reinvention in Cinema
This course explores the Nouvelle Vague (French New Wave), the groundbreaking film movement that transformed world cinema in the late 1950s and 1960s. Through the works of directors such as François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Agnès Varda, Claude Chabrol, and Éric Rohmer, students will examine how this generation of filmmakers rejected studio traditions to create a new cinematic language—one marked by spontaneity, location shooting, handheld cameras, jump cuts, and a self-conscious engagement with film history.
Finally, we will enjoy Nouvelle Vague (2025) by Richard Linklater in comparison to what we have learned together in this course.
Coursework includes critical readings, discussion-based seminars, after having viewed the films at your leisure. A subscription to the Criterion Channel is a requirement for this course.
Key Films May Include:
- Beau Serge (Chabrol, 1958)
- The 400 Blows (Truffaut, 1959)
- Breathless (Godard, 1960)
- Cléo from 5 to 7 (Varda, 1962)
- My Night at Maud’s (Rohmer, 1969)
