The French New Wave: Revolution and Reinvention in Cinema

This course explores the Nouvelle Vague (French New Wave), the groundbreaking film movement that transformed world cinema in the late 1950s and 1960s. Through the works of directors such as François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Agnès Varda, Claude Chabrol, and Éric Rohmer, students will examine how this generation of filmmakers rejected studio traditions to create a new cinematic language—one marked by spontaneity, location shooting, handheld cameras, jump cuts, and a self-conscious engagement with film history.

Finally, we will enjoy Nouvelle Vague (2025) by Richard Linklater in comparison to what we have learned together in this course. 

Coursework includes critical readings, discussion-based seminars, after having viewed the films at your leisure. A subscription to the Criterion Channel is a requirement for this course.

Join us on Zoom, beginning January 5th, at 6 pm on Mondays, for this exceptional 4-week cultural class exploring French Directors and Theatre on Film. Discover how four French directors have used the theatre as a backdrop for their cinematic vision: Jean Renoir's ravishing tribute to Commedia dell'arte (Le Carrosse d'Or); François Truffaut's portrayal of a Parisian theatre troupe during Nazi occupation (Le Dernier Métro); Philippe Le Guay's polished exploration of the personal and professional lives of a pair of actors (Alceste à Bicyclette); and Alexis Michalik's breezy look at the unconventional creation of a classic play (Edmond). You will be expected to watch each film independently before our weekly discussions. All films are available on Amazon Prime or YouTube with English subtitles for a nominal rental fee.
This class is open to students at level B1+, with the prerequisite of having completed level 206 or possessing an equivalent level.

PARKING

Street parking on SW 20th St. facing the Kamm House is limited. Free parking is available in Lot A at SW 18th and SW Columbia. Please obtain a parking pass from the office. After 6 pm weekdays, students may park in the Willamette Dental lot at SW 20th and SW Jefferson as available.
