How does something witnessed in the world eventually become something that belongs in a graphic narrative? Join French-American
graphic artist Ziyed for a conversation and live-drawing demonstration
exploring the path from field observation and research to selection, narrative development and sequential art.
Through drawings, notes, research and other material gathered through Ziyed's project Observation Station, you'll learn about how
observations accumulate before an artist decides what to keep, omit, combine, simplify or develop into a sequence.Ziyed will also
discuss the material that does not become part of a story, and why selection is itself part of the creative process.
You can look forward to a short participatory exercise where you'll be invited to observe something in the room, make a quick drawing
and/or written notation, and consider what narrative possibilities might be contained in that observation.
The event takes place directly before the inaugural Club BD meeting, offering a bridge into questions of point of view, visual
interpretation and sequence before the discussion of Jacques Ferrandez's illustrated adaptation of Albert Camus' L'Etranger.
No previous drawing experience required. This event is free, but an RSVP is required.
Observation Station is a mobile, site-responsive drawing installation that transforms climbing gyms and movement spaces into observation spaces. Positioned directly within environments of physical discipline, the project uses observational drawing to capture the biomechanics, rhythms, and spatial negotiations of bodies in motion.
Moving beyond traditional representation, the project champions a collaborative visual archive. LGBTQ+ athletes and underserved community members are not passive subjects, but active contributors to a shared visual archive, demonstrating how embodied practices generate unique forms of visual knowledge.
Ziyed is a French-American visual artist working through graphic narrative and observational drawing. An alumnus of the ESMA School of Arts
in Toulouse, his practice investigates the biomechanics, spatial tension, and communal dynamics of bodies in motion. A dedicated civic
participant, Ziyed serves as a Public Art Juror for the City of Eugene and has exhibited extensively, including at the Hult Center's
Mayor’s Art Show and the Mairies of the 4th and 11th Parisian Districts. His sequential artwork has been published internationally by
major outlets including Image Comics and BOOM! Studios.
