This course explores immigration in France and elsewhere through cinema, from the postwar period to the present day. The films examined offer diverse perspectives on migration, identity, integration, memory, discrimination, and cultural transmission. By studying works by filmmakers from different generations and backgrounds, students will discover how French cinema reflects the social, political, and cultural transformations of contemporary France. Through film screenings, critical readings, and class discussions conducted in French, students will develop their ability to analyze cinematic style, narrative techniques, and historical context while deepening their understanding of the complex issues surrounding immigration and cultural diversity. The course also places these films within broader debates on citizenship, colonial memory, the French suburbs (banlieues), national identity, and multiculturalism.
