French Classes for Adults

Adult classes (18+) are taught in French by a native-fluent instructor in a stress-free, exam-free environment. General classes emphasize oral and written comprehension and production. Themed classes and workshops hone in on specific linguistic and cultural skills. Textbooks and course materials are available for purchase at the Alliance.

In response to COVID19, the Alliance is keeping its social distance by only offering online classes until further notice. See you online!

In Person Classes

In Person classes are held at Kamm House and are limited in size. Only fully vaccinated students are admitted.

French on the Go

Choose among core French language skills workshops and cultural discussions. Levels range from A1 to C1. Drop in for a single session or take a series of four. All sessions run an hour and a half.

Cultural Seminars

Cultural Seminars are a recent addition to the Alliance’s offerings that help us fulfill our mission of promoting French culture. Between class and event, in French or in English, those seminars are designed to nurture a more expansive knowledge of a particular subject in a different setting than a typical French language class. Most of the seminars included pre-COVID 19 outings in museum galleries, music and performance venues, and degustations or hands-on cooking classes. Partners from past, present and future seminars, including the Portland Art Museum, White Bird, and the Portland Opera, help us bring a broader understanding of French culture and lifestyle to the community.

For the first time, since the Alliance went fully online, we are offering Cultural Seminars again. This time we invite you to travel across the regions of France by way of their unique and traditional food and wines.

Essential Everyday French

Essential Everyday French classes (three levels A1/A2, A2/B1, B1), focus on oral communication and comprehension at three levels. Practical, everyday topics are woven into real-life dialogues with vocabulary (both formal and slang/informal) and grammar tips. Improve your conversational skills, gain confidence and start talking!

Civilisation de la Francophonie

Through the text, Civilisation progressive de la francophonie, learn about the diversity and richness of societies outside of France; the culture and civilization, traditional dances, food, transportation and more.

French Classes for Children

The children's program offers classes for Anglophone children ages 2-14, and classes for children ages 11-14 who have formerly attended French immersion schools and wish to keep up their French. The parent-child classes (2-3 year-olds, and 4-6 year-olds) are designed to provide a playful, stimulating environment in which parents and children learn together. In the 7-10 and 11-14 classes, children will study French in an engaging, educational and age-appropriate setting through cultural and linguistic immersion. Following an interactive method designed especially for young learners, each session presents different themes and linguistic skills, allowing students to explore the French language and francophone culture.

In response to COVID19, the Alliance is keeping its social distance by only offering online classes until further notice. See you online!

Ages 5-6

The classes for 5 and 6 year olds will study subjects sure to spark their imagination and curiosity. Whether your child is a beginner learner or well on their way toward fluency, you will find a perfect fit to enhance and enrich their daily activities with French language practice and, more importantly, fun.

Ages 7-10

After the online school day has ended and with few after-school programs available this fall, your child may want or need some additional French practice in subjects sure to spark their imagination and curiosity. Whether your child is a true beginner or well on their way toward fluency, you will find a perfect fit to enhance and enrich their online school activities with French language practice and, more importantly, fun. Choose from French for True Beginners, or Nature Explorers at Introductory or Continuing Immersion levels.
