Algerian Director Merzak Allouache Opens Cascade Festival of African Films

The 26th Cascade Film Festival opens at the Hollywood Theatre with Rooftops, a film by Merzak Allouache.

Taking place over a single day, paced by the five daily calls to prayer, Allouache’s film tells five independent stories that intermingle and clash, set on the rooftop terraces of five historic neighborhoods in Algiers, the capital city.

Allouache presents a microcosm of Algerian society as he casts a critical eye on social issues such as class and gender inequality, poverty, corruption and the rise of religious fundamentalism, artfully using humor to lighten the serious subject matter.

Rooftops is presented in Arabic and French with English subtitles and runs 91 minutes, starting at 6 pm. The director, Merzak Allouache, will be on hand for the opening, and local Algerian musician Moh Alileche will play live pre-film music.

All films in the festival are free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. Click here to view the full calendar. Other films in French and Arabic include Pirates of Salé and Run.

Two of Mr. Allouache’s earlier films, the now-classic Bab el-Oued City and The Other World, showed at CFAF in 2000 and 2006, respectively.
