Fêtes Galantes: A Masterful Celebration of Baroque Music

Cascadia Viols presents a special concert of French and Italian baroque music on Friday, September 16, at the First Christian Church in downtown Portland.

Due to a sudden illness one of the performers, the Fêtes Galantes concert September 16 has been cancelled.

Tina Chancey will perform on the rare pardessus de viole, with John Mark Rozendaal on the basse de viole (viola da gamba.) Webb Wiggins rounds out the group on harpsichord.

The trio will be presenting music by Couperin, Marais, Corelli, as well as the first modern performance of Forqueray’s fiendishly difficult bass viol suites.

Tickets are available at the door for $20 and $15. Let them know you’re an Alliance member and receive the special $15 member rate! For more information or to reserve a ticket, please call 503.774.4231.

The pardessus de viole was invented around the year 1700. Violins had begun emerging in Italy, and the pardessus was developed to allow people accustomed to viols to play violin music. With a sound more reminiscent of the viol, the pardessus is characterized as a hybrid between viols and violins. The pardessus was often played by women, as the method of holding the pardessus in one’s lap was considered more lady-like than holding a violin on the shoulder.

Enjoy a special musical introduction to the Basse de viole at the Alliance Open House Thursday, September 8.
