December Mini Classes

Mini classes  are a perfect opportunity to keep studying French without a long commitment. Each class targets a specific area or theme. Mini classes are offered in a series of 3 weeks, 1h30 hours per session, starting the week of November 28.

French for travelers

For A1 level

Interested in traveling to a French speaking country, but worried you won’t be able to get by with the language? Take the three “French for travelers” mini lessons and learn how to check in to your hotel, use the metro, buy tickets, reserve a tour, order food and take the train. This course is for true beginners and will be taught mostly in English.

Storytelling for beginners

For A1 level

What do a rainbow pizza crust, a belly dancing baby monkey, and a vengeful box of French fries have in common? These are all characters that past students have created and used to develop imaginative class stories! In this creative mini-class for beginners, the teacher will use questions in slow, comprehensible French to guide you through the process of describing and illustrating a character and then writing a simple story. The focus will be on oral and written comprehension, with the possibility of more speaking and writing depending on students’ level/comfort. This is a class for beginning-level (CEFR A1) students or those working up to low intermediate.

Grammar on the go

For A1 level

This class is for beginners having completed at least 101 class. It focuses on grammar notions studied in the first chapters of beginning Core classes. During the class students will have an opportunity to work on dialogues, study texts and work on their oral and written production skills.

Grammar in Context

For A1 level

If you feel you need more review with foundational grammar but prefer interaction and learning through media to lectures and textbooks, this class could be a perfect fit for you! Learn or review essential grammatical concepts for advanced beginning/low intermediate level (upper A1/lower A2) through authentic songs, readings, video clips, and games in this engaging mini-class. Topics covered may include passé composé, preview of imparfait, futur proche, direct and indirect object pronouns. Reading, writing, speaking and listening will be a part of every lesson.

French with dictée

For A1 level

In this 3-week class, you will improve your listening comprehension skills, spelling, and vocabulary while solidifying your understanding of grammatical points taught in the CECR A1 level. Learn the same way as the French do: through a series of dictation activities and short discussions about some of the most troublesome areas of spelling, agreement, and conjugation.

Pronouns A2/B1

For A2-B1 levels

Vous ne les comprenez pas!? Pronouns are troublesome. In this intensive workshop, students will review and master the form and function of object pronouns (direct, indirect, and prepositional) and will practice using them with a variety of verb tenses via both written activities and oral production exercises with classmates.

La cantatrice chauve d’Eugène Ionesco

For A2-B1 levels

During this three-week mini-cours, we will read aloud Ionesco’s riotous 1950 play. Written in simple language, La cantatrice chauve is perfect for learners wishing to begin reading French texts. You will prepare for class by reading the section in advance and looking up any unknown words. This will help with more fluid reading in class. A pdf of the text will be provided. Feel free to get into character! Lively expression will be celebrated! Come prepared to laugh!

Stéréotypes: Regards croisés sur la France et les français

For A2-B1 levels

In this series, you are invited to discover and discuss various stereotypes, clichés, and jokes about the ways France and the French are perceived in other cultures. What do the Japanese or the Norwegians have to say about the quintessentially “French” lifestyle? What stereotypical representations of Metropolitan France are common in Quebec? The participants will be encouraged to share their own experiences and knowledge that either confirm or disprove such stereotypes and to remember to take everything with a grain of salt!

Grammar And Writing Through Literature: Annie Ernaux

For B1 level

Annie Ernaux is considered by many to be one of the most important French authors of the 20th and 21st centuries.  She won the Nobel Prize for literature in 2022. In this three-week seminar targeting intermediate learners, students will use excerpts of Annie Ernaux’s work to review verb tense, agreements, narration, and sentence structure. They will also develop writing skills with an autoportrait writing activity modeled on Ernaux’s distinct style. The excerpts presented will be from Journal du dehors (1995), La Vie extérieure (2000) and Les Années (2008).

Phonétique

For B1 level

This mini class is ideal for English speakers at intermediate level wishing to improve their pronunciation. You will work on “rythme et  intonations, enchaînements et liaisons”. You will also be introduced to a few particularities of the French language phonetics.

Paris par arrondissements

For levels B1 through C1

Travel to the famed City of Lights from the comfort of your own home! Discover the charming neighborhoods of this beautiful city. In each session, we will explore an arrondissement or two and learn about its main attractions, including museums, monuments, parks, recommended restaurants, and more. Your teacher Melody, who lives in Paris, will serve as your enthusiastic tour guide and suggest walking routes. Open to all students B1 and up, regardless of whether you have taken Part I.

Godard: La Nouvelle Vague

For levels B1 through C1

A cinematic genius, Jean-Luc Godard established himself as a pioneer of the French New Wave in the 1960s. Discover three of his most iconic films from that time period: A bout de souffle (Breathless), Vivre sa vie (My life to live), and Alphaville. In each class, we will analyze a film, learn new vocabulary, and discuss what made his work so innovative. All three films are available to stream for free on Kanopy and on a variety of other platforms.

Grammaire Avancée Et Conversation 

For levels B2-C1

The subjects chosen for this course have a great diversity and cultural richness. The course begins with a viewing of a video pertaining to daily life. The video is followed by a conversation and a debate. Grammar exercises always follow this debate and aim to work on problematic areas for advanced students.

Phontique Avancée

Pronunciation is the key to successful communication in French and this 3-week workshop will concentrate on areas of pronunciation that are typically troublesome for advanced learners of French studying at the B2 and C1 levels.

Street parking on SW 20th St. facing the Kamm House is limited. Free parking is available in Lot B at SW 18th and SW Columbia. Please obtain a parking pass from the office. After 6 pm weekdays, students may park in the Willamette Dental lot at SW 20th and SW Jefferson as available.
