German Occupation and French Cinema

In-person class for levels B2/C1

This course will focus on the history of France during the German occupation and the French resistance. Through diverse representations of this tumultuous period of modern French history, we will also study the important authors whose contributions made these films possible. Although historical films will be the main guideline, we will discuss how historical reenactment and documentary can sometimes become historical fact.

Essential Everyday French - A1 to C1

Learn how native speakers communicate on a day-to-day basis. Interaction and exchanges between students are facilitated by the instructor following weekly thematic topics that include essential vocabulary and grammar.

This class is offered for:

  • A1/A2 (prerequisite: 104 or equivalent),
  • B1 (prerequisite: 205 or equivalent), and
  • B2/C1 levels (prerequisite: CECR B1)

Littérature Française

Discover French literary works and authors with a well-structured textbook. Learn about different authors and read excerpts of their works. Perfect for those wishing to broaden their knowledge of French literature beyond the scope of a single book or author. Throughout the year, you will discover literary works from the Middle Ages to contemporary French literature.

Meet your fellow literature buffs, read  and discuss your reading under expert guidance from Marie-Pierre Wolfe. Marie-Pierre will send you the weekly questionnaire to promote in-depth understanding of each book segment.  Book choice will be announced soon.

Pronunciation is the key to successful communication in French, and this 10-week class will concentrate on areas of pronunciation that are typically troublesome for English-speaking students. This class is offered at three levels: A1, A2, and B1.

Defining Moments in Art - B1/B2


For visual arts enthusiasts and those simply curious about the art world, explore several artworks each week to learn about the events, personalities, and works that have had the greatest impact in their time. This highly interactive class uses art as a vehicle for conversation, focusing on the study of art from the 1940s. It's a 5-week-long class.

DELF B1 Preparation

This class will interest you if:

1. You are planning on passing DELF B1 exam and need to prepare for it.
2. You’ve completed B1 level and wish to consolidate the newly acquired skills, all the while evaluating your strengths and weaknesses before jumping to next level.

The class has a double goal: preparing you to DELF exam structure and work on all of the aspects one needs to master in order to validate a level to successfully start the next one. A partial simulation of the DELF exam (except oral production part) in the end of the 10-week series will allow students to have a comprehensive evaluation of their skills.

This class will study Part 2 of the book. Having completed Part 1 is not required.

French Impressionism B1-C1

Step back in 1870s to explore the fantastic and creative world of Impressionism from Paris to Giverny. Gigi Kuhn will share the extraordinary lives of five French masters and their exceptional artworks (Monet, Caillebotte, Degas, Seurat, Toulouse-Lautrec). You will learn how to describe their masterpieces through the five senses, appreciate the cultural, social and political context in France that contributed to one of the most critical art movements, and why Claude Monet will always be "the father of Impressionism."

French Pronunciation B1

Welcome to the French Phonetics course! This interactive and hands-on course features numerous activities and exercises designed to reinforce your French phonetics skills. Guided by a native French speaker and experienced instructor, you will advance your pronunciation and listening comprehension in French. Throughout the course, you will practice auditory discrimination, explore sound changes based on word position within a sentence and their phonetic environment (transformation), accurately identify French sounds, verify your pronunciation (identification and verification), and develop observation skills by analyzing the phonetic features of native French speakers (observation).

Grammar For Conversation A1 to B1

This class presents corresponding level grammar concepts through everyday life situations using current spoken French. The course covers, on average, 2 chapters per session from the textbook, during which students have the opportunity to discuss and apply grammar topics through written activities, conversation, and audio comprehension.

This class is offered for A1/A2 (prerequisite: 103 or equivalent) and B1 (prerequisite: 205 or equivalent), in-person and online.

Régions de France B1-C1

Explore the rich diversity of regions from France, Normandie to Occitanie. Gigi Kuhn will share the history, geography, and civilization unique to each region and take you on a memorable journey where language and culture become one. Meet local guest speakers during the class to enhance your authentic experience. Be ready to embark on a fun virtual trip to the most visited country in the world. Bon voyage!


French Ripped From The Headlines B1 to C1


Want to speak with a rich vocabulary and use idioms and common expressions spontaneously? Stop just encountering new vocabulary and start retaining and using it in this class based on RFI’s “Le journal en Français Facile”! RFI-FF is a publicly supported nonprofit organisation that’s existed for 23 years and offers a wide range of subjects in its news broadcasts. Street parking on SW 20th St. facing the Kamm House is limited. Free parking is available in Lot A at SW 18th and SW Columbia. Please obtain a parking pass from the office. After 6 pm weekdays, students may park in the Willamette Dental lot at SW 20th and SW Jefferson as available.
