French Classes for Adults

Adult classes (18+) are taught in French by a native-fluent instructor in a stress-free, exam-free environment. General classes emphasize oral and written comprehension and production. Themed classes and workshops hone in on specific linguistic and cultural skills. Textbooks and course materials are available for purchase at the Alliance.

In response to COVID19, the Alliance is keeping its social distance by only offering online classes until further notice. See you online!

French à la carte

Join fellow francophones for French à la carte – theme and topic specific workshops orchestrated online by an Alliance Française teacher. Choose among core French language skills workshops and cultural discussions. Levels range from A1 to C1. Drop in for a single session or take a series of four. All sessions run an hour and a half.

Beginner French Classes [A1]

Immediately following the True Beginner Classes, the 102 to 106 series (CECR A1) develops the student's comprehension and speaking skills to include making requests and appointments; comparisons; detailed descriptions; expressing quantities; directions; the simple future; past perfect and imperfect tenses; introduction to the subjunctive.

In response to COVID19, the Alliance is keeping its social distance by only offering online classes until further notice. See you online!

Intermediate French Classes [A2]

Classes in the range of 201 to 206 (CECR A2) progressively solidify the student's abilities as an independent speaker expressing a wide range of emotions, opinions, intentions and preferences; discussing events in all tenses; developing use of the subjunctive, and more.

In response to COVID19, the Alliance is keeping its social distance by only offering online classes until further notice. See you online!

Cultural Seminars

Cultural Seminars are a recent addition to the Alliance’s offerings that help us fulfill our mission of promoting French culture. Between class and event, in French or in English, those seminars are designed to nurture a more expansive knowledge of a particular subject in a different setting than a typical French language class. Most of the seminars include outings in museum galleries, music and performance venues, and degustations or hands-on cooking classes. Partners from past, present and future seminars, including the Portland Art Museum, White Bird, and the Portland Opera, help us bring a broader understanding of French culture and lifestyle to the community.

In response to COVID19, the Alliance is keeping its social distance by only offering online classes until further notice. See you online!

Intensive French Classes

Do you want to learn French faster than others? Challenge yourself with our Fast Track classes offered at 101 and 102 levels. You will cover those levels twice as fast as in a regular class! Each level meets twice a week for 5 weeks.

In response to COVID19, the Alliance is keeping its social distance by only offering online classes until further notice. See you online!

Essential Everyday French

Essential Everyday French classes (three levels A1/A2, A2/B1, B1), focus on oral communication and comprehension at three levels. Practical, everyday topics are woven into real-life dialogues with vocabulary (both formal and slang/informal) and grammar tips. Improve your conversational skills, gain confidence and start talking!

French Classes for Children

The children's program offers classes for Anglophone children ages 2-14, and classes for children ages 11-14 who have formerly attended French immersion schools and wish to keep up their French. The parent-child classes (2-3 year-olds, and 4-6 year-olds) are designed to provide a playful, stimulating environment in which parents and children learn together. In the 7-10 and 11-14 classes, children will study French in an engaging, educational and age-appropriate setting through cultural and linguistic immersion. Following an interactive method designed especially for young learners, each session presents different themes and linguistic skills, allowing students to explore the French language and francophone culture.

In response to COVID19, the Alliance is keeping its social distance by only offering online classes until further notice. See you online!

Ages 5-6

The classes for 5 and 6 year olds will study subjects sure to spark their imagination and curiosity. Whether your child is a true beginner or well on their way toward fluency, you will find a perfect fit to enhance and enrich their daily activities with French language practice and, more importantly, fun. Choose from Art Studio for Introductory Immersion (beginners welcome) or Travel Club for Continuing Immersion.

Ages 7-10

After the online school day has ended and with few after-school programs available this fall, your child may want or need some additional French practice in subjects sure to spark their imagination and curiosity. Whether your child is a true beginner or well on their way toward fluency, you will find a perfect fit to enhance and enrich their online school activities with French language practice and, more importantly, fun. Choose from Science Lab for Introductory Immersion (beginners welcome) or Travel Club and Science Lab for Continuing Immersion.
