March is the month when the international community celebrates francophonie. The Alliance Française de Portland presents a variety of events to celebrate francophone cultures and languages. Francophonie, Bilingualism & Ecriture

Presentation and Discussion With Claudine Fisher, Plus Coffee & Croissants

The themes of the title will be interwoven to present an overview of Francophonie, bilingualism and the art of writing, through the short stories of Out of Vogue/Loin de l'Air du Temps, by Claudine Fisher, retired Professor of French at PSU and former Honorary Consul of France, as well as honorary board member of the Alliance Française de Portland. 

Excerpts from the book will serve as a springboard for the presentation and will lead to discussions on each subject with many questions & interruptions (hopefully) from the audience.

Parents may leave their children in neighboring room for a movie projection monitored by AF staff.


Stay after the lecture to mingle and meet fellow francophones and expats. Learn what the Alliance has to offer to the expat community.

Ciné-matinée jeunesse

Movie For Young Audiences Followed By Snacks

March 19, 11am-12:30pm, In-Person, At The Kamm House

Children are invited to watch a movie in French (with English subtitles) with their parents, or while their parents attend the lecture "Francophonie, Bilingualism & Ecriture." The two events will run simultaneously in neighboring rooms at the Alliance.

Before the movie, our volunteers will entertain children with story time. After the movie, children will enjoy snacks with their parents.

About the movie:

Akissi is an adaptation of a comic book by Marguerite Abouet, author from  Côte d'Ivoire whose writing has been celebrated at the prestigious festival d'Angoulême and whose movie has been nominated for a César for best animation. Akissi a coproduction between the Côte d'Ivoire and France. The story:

Akissi is a little girl, the youngest of her siblings, who dreams of having a little brother or a little sister. While she is on the way to the market, she meets a cute little monkey whom she calls "Boubou." After going through a series of adventures with him and his friends, she will have to face a new challenge: convince her family to welcome the little prankster monkey as her new little brother!

Assia Djebar

Literary Discussion With Margarita Smagina

March 23, 5:30-6:30pm, on Zoom, in french

Assia Djebar refigured the role of women in Algerian society before, during, and after the Algerian War for Independence, becoming one of the pioneers of modern Maghrebian Francophone literature. In this literary discussion, led by French literature specialist Margarita Smagina, participants are invited to discover some of the themes, motifs, and stylistic elements that characterize Djebar’s writing through the lens of her 1959 short story “Il n’y a pas d’exil”. The text will be shared with the participants if needed.

This event is in French and is open to all. Recommended for French speakers at levels B1 and up.

Concours de La Plume d’or

French Language Contest

March 22, 10:30am, In-Person, At The Kamm House

For the Alliance students level A2 and up: enter this French language contest for a chance to win a trip to Paris. The results of three winners from Portland will be sent to Paris. The jury will then choose the best submissions from all participants from Alliances worldwide, and award prizes. First prize is a week-long trip to Paris.  To register email Director of Education and Culture, Elene Zedgindize.

FESTINEMA JUNIOR 

Young Audiences Film Festival - Open To All Schools Offering French Programs

March and April - in participating schools

To celebrate the month of Francophonie, the Alliance is presenting Festinema Junior, a francophone film festival for young audiences. Festinema Junior is an educational project created in 2014 by the Alliance Française Network in the US, with films generously provided by the French Institute.

All of the screenings are entirely FREE for the participating schools. The Alliance Française provides the films, along with educational portfolios for each film (in French, English and Spanish) with pre-screening and post-screening activities. The films are available for screening in March and April. For inquiries about the festival, please contact Director of Education and Culture, Elene Zedginidze.

PARKING

Street parking on SW 20th St. facing the Kamm House is limited. Free parking is available in Lot A at SW 18th and SW Columbia. Please obtain a parking pass from the office. After 6 pm weekdays, students may park in the Willamette Dental lot at SW 20th and SW Jefferson as available.
